Cold & Flu Season: The Dental Connection!

A commonly asked question is related to your toothbrush and a cold or flu.  After recovering from a cold or the flu, one of the most important steps that you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs are known to linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging any sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush.  Be smart - keep a spare, just in case!  To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

  • Wash your hands before and after brushing
  • Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen
  • Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months.  Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

We hope these tips help!  If you have any questions or need to make an appointment, call our office at 918-455-0123 or ask us on Facebook.  Have a great day!

March: The Dental Connection!

March has arrived, and that can only mean one thing: it's National Nutrition Month.  Every March, thousands of dentists and hygienists celebrate this occasion, and this year is no different. This March, our team encourages your family to think about diabetes, obesity and periodontal disease, and how healthy eating and physical activity may improve periodontal health.

Small changes can really make a big difference, and the American Diabetic Association (ADA) has some advice on ways to start improving your diet this March:

  • Focus on fruits and vegetables:  Add a serving each day to one meal and increase it every few weeks.  Adding more of these foods into your diet is important whether you buy frozen, fresh, or organic.
  • Think fresh, think local:  From farmer's markets to community-supported agriculture, you have may options to find new, fresh foods in Tulsa.
  • Make each and every calorie count:  When you are choosing between options, focus on the one with more of the vitamins and nutrients that you need.  Sometimes, foods with fewer calories aren't always the healthiest options.
  • It's tempting, but...:  If you have a sweet tooth, have fruit and yogurt for dessert.  If you crave a snack in the afternoon, enjoy some trail mix or nuts.
  • Expand your horizons:  Try a fish you've never eaten before or find a new vegetable recipe.  By testing yourself, you might find new healthy favorites to add to your regular grocery list.

If you have additional questions about periodontal disease or keeping yourself and your mouth healthy, please give our office a call at 918-455-0123.  Have a great March!

God Bless,
DRT

Gum Health And Your Heart: The Dental Connection!

The effects of gum disease on the body are mostly seen affecting the heart and cardiovascular system.  With gum disease present, the oral bacteria can attach themselves to the plaque that line the coronary arteries and then increase the plaque build-up in these arteries, which are critical to heart function.  They can also cause blood clots to form in the coronary arteries.  That is why it is important to visit your dentist at least every six months in order to check your overall gum health.

Call our office at 918-455-0123 to make your next cleaning and check-up appointment!

The Cutting Edge: The Dental Connection!

Recently, our team at Thomas Family Dentistry was asked, "With so many changes that are always occurring in the field of dentistry, how do you stay so up-to-date on new technology?"  And our answer...

Keeping up-to-date on the newest dental technology is a high priority to our entire staff at Thomas Family Dentistry.  Reviewing Dental Scientific journals, attending study club meetings that are held in the Tulsa area, as well as attending regional and national dental meetings across the country are just a few common means of receiving the current information.  Recently I was in Dallas participating in a dental course by Denmat, the cutting edge California based company that introduced the world to Lumineers, the painless, no prep veneers that have revolutionized the world of cosmetic dentistry. And now, Denmat has introduced Snap On Smiles and Snap It! - the cosmetic alternative to conventional removable partials and flipper appliances.

Contact our office at 918-455-0123 if you have any questions concerning the cosmetic advances in dentistry! With so many recent advances in cosmetic dentistry, anyone can have a bright, beautiful smile!
